There are many things that I want to do in this world. Some of those things are dreams for days when I have more disposable income, a bigger following, a more successful career, etc. But there are some goals I can cross off the list starting right here and now, and this goal starts with this article. Having at time of writing recently turned 24, I decided there are some things in my life that I’d like to change. One of those things is my relationship with alcohol. Now this isn’t going to be a self-help article about me trying to quit the sauce. I don’t currently have a problem with alcohol abuse. What I’m going to do is seek out and try to learn and experience as much as I can that the world of adult beverages has to offer.

This is an idea I’ve kicked around in my head for a while now. During my college days, I never really took the time to learn about or understand what I was drinking. It was more just a race to get as fucked up as I could, which is the norm in the dorm. Now that I am a graduate of an institution of higher learning, I feel like a more mature relationship is called for. Now with all that said, let’s establish some parameters:

1) The goal is to have 1 drink per day. If for some reason this leads to a deterioration of my health, work flow, work quality, general productivity, or anything else I’ll temp things back a bit. I don’t expect that that will be the case, but I’m not interested in becoming an alcoholic merely for the amusement of the internet.

2) I am going to try as many different varieties of alcohol as I can. To start out, I will be focusing on harder alcohols (whiskey, vodka, gin, etc) just to kind of narrow the options. I will eventually get to wine and beer, and I may very well mix them in sooner rather than later, but for now I’m sticking with the harder stuff.

3) I’m going to be sticking with the bar metrics for the most part. When I say “drink” I mean the standard definition of the term. That means 1.5oz of hard alcohol with roughly 4oz of mixer (can vary, but not much more than that, I don’t want to totally mask the experience), 5oz glass of wine, 12oz glass of beer.

4) Nothing is off limits. I’m willing to try any combination that isn’t immediately hazardous to my health (that would be a no on the asbestos and whiskey shake).

5) I’m VERY OPEN to suggestions. I’ve got some basic ideas written down already but I’m very interested in what other people are drinking and why. Hit me up on twitter, comment on each article, yell at me from a distance, whatever means of communication you are most comfortable with please feel free to use it to get in touch with me and let me know what you’re pounding down to have a good time.

6) I’ll be drinking without food. Not to say I will be drinking on an empty stomach, but I’ll be drinking independent of any meals during the day. That way I can judge the alcohol on its own merits rather than the pairing.

7) This is more a disclaimer than anything, this article series isn’t about getting fucked up. This is about answering my curiosity when it comes to alcohol and having a long and healthy relationship with our liquid party enhancer.

So there you have it folks. I will begin this process today, sampling different combinations and reporting my findings to you, the reader hanging on my every word (or at least waiting for me to get mega fucked up by this experiment). My contact information is at the top and bottom of this article, so feel free to use any of it to reach out to me. Until next time, bottoms up fuckers :).
